Poker Datamining

Introduction to Poker Datamining

This article about poker datamining were written for SuitedAces.com by Jake.

Datamining can be an easy way of increasing your winrate, since it doesn't require you to make adjustments to your game before you see the results. In a nutshell it gives your more information about your opponents, and that way enable you to make better decisions with your existing poker knowledge. The article is divided into 3 parts.

  • What is datamining
  • Benefits of dataming
  • How to datamine

Please note that some poker rooms consider datamining an unfair advantage. Please read your poker rooms terms and conditions before you datamine.

What Is Poker Datamining?

Poker datamining is the act of saving hand histories from games that you aren't playing in yourself. If you datamine often, you will end up with hundreds of thousands hand histories that you can import into Pokertracker/Holdem Manager and that way learn more about your opponents.

Benefits of Datamining

Most players datamine to get more accurate stats in their HUD, so they can get better reads on their opponents. When you have been datamining for a couple of weeks, you will begin to notice that you have 100-300 hands on a huge amount of players that you have never played against.

This may not sound like a big deal, but each time one of those "unknown" players sit down at your table, you will instantly have a general idea of how they play based on their stats. Against good players this doesn't change much, but when it is a bad player you can start exploiting their leaks much faster, since you don't have to wait 15-30 hands before you realize that they are playing 60% of their hands.

This may not seem like something that will make a big difference compared to 5-bet bluffing a regular or hero calling a big river bluff with A-high. The extra money you win from the fish will usually come in form of value betting them with marginal hands. If you can add just 1 more value bet netting you 5bb every 1.000 hands you play because you identify the fish faster, you will have added 0.5bb to your winrate. 0.5bb/100 hands isn't a lot, but if you are a good player it may take you 50 hours of studying to get a similar increase in your winrate, simply because you already know so much about the game that it is very difficult to learn any more.

If you datamine a lot, you will also find it useful against regulars (players who play often). You will get a very large amount of hands where they have participated, and as a result very accurate stats on how they play fx. how often they 3-bet from the blinds against a button opener and then fold to a 4-bet.

How To Datamine

In order to datamine you will need a "handgrabber". This is a small program that will save hand histories from any poker table that you open, regardless of whether or not you are playing on it. Each poker network require a different handgrabber, so if you play at both Ongame and Full Tilt Poker, you will need to buy both a "Ongame handgrabber" and a "Full Tilt Poker handgrabber". Before you select a handgrabber, you should be aware that whenever a poker site makes a "big" update to their software, the handgrabber will need to be updated. This has caused several different people who were selling handgrabbers to go out of business, since they couldn't afford to create the update needed for the handgrabber they were selling. While this shouldn't be a big concern for you, I still think it is important to know before spending the 40-60$ that a handgrabber cost. I personally prefer handgrabbers made by Idleminer. They have been in the business for a long time, and has always provided good support to their customers and updated the handgrabbers whenever an update by a poker room caused them to stop working. Below are a list of the poker rooms/networks that Idleminer has made handgrabbers for.

  • Full Tilt Poker
  • Party Poker
  • Ongame
  • Cereus
  • Bodog
  • Everest Poker
  • iPoker
  • Pacific Poker
