Team RedKings!

Postby TEOHENGLAI on Mon Jul 20, 2009 5:09 pm

It’s been 4 days since I’ve been officially endorsed as a Team Redkings Pro and the transition from a live player to an online player is proving to be a challenge. As a live player for the last 16 years, I’ve developed certain dependencies on live tells and mental notes such as opponent’s sitting posture, pupil dilation, hand resting posture, breathing pattern, the way my opponents are viewing his hole cards, how did he throw out the chips, how are his chips stacked, how much money did he have left in his wallet when he bought-in, did he just lose a big pot or get a disturbing phone call...etc.etc. You get the picture.

However, all these skill sets which I’ve worked so hard on refining over the years are now suddenly useless! My opponents are no longer living breathing human beings sitting across the table from me; they’re now in a form of weird sounding names (which are alien or unreadable mostly) in boxes on not only 1 but across several tables, betting and raising simultaneously! Culture Shock! I can no longer look at the way they dress... to determine their playing tendencies, chat them up... to define their mood........sigh. The game have changed, it’s a math game now.

Gone were the days when I can put my opponent on Ace high just by noticing how he squeezed his hole cards, make sick call-downs with queen high just by reading his limbic tells. Instead, I’ve to rely on player notes and poker tracking software to make these decisions. What used to be a certainty to me are now in a form vague percentages, numbers, possible hand ranges...etc.

However, despite of all the difficulties and negativities, I do think that online poker increases your focus on the game itself. All the distractions of live game considerations are now narrowed down to mainly technical considerations. The number of hands played is a hundred times that of live game. Game play knowledge and experience can be learned and gained quickly. I am looking forward to grinding online in the coming weeks and hope to increase my technical knowledge of the game. Will keep you guys posted of my progress.

Asiangravy is now sitting on my couch waiting for me to go out for lunch, so I’ll be signing off now. In the meantime, good luck at the tables!
